New Kiltimagh academy to train next generation of railway professionals and address national skills shortage

Planning permission for the Pro Rail Academy in Kiltimagh has been welcomed as a major milestone for skills development, employment and balanced regional growth across the West of Ireland.

The proposed academy will provide specialist training in key areas of the railway sector, including Permanent Way, Electrification, Signalling, Telecoms, Railway Civils, Surveying and On-Track Plant.

A dedicated Innovation and Research & Development Hub will also form part of the project, with the aim of positioning Mayo as a national leader in railway workforce development and innovation.

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the planning approval and praised Pro Rail Academy CEO Eamonn Maloney for his leadership and vision in progressing the project over the past two years.

He also acknowledged Mayo County Council for its proactive engagement throughout the planning process.

Minister Dillon said the approval brings the vision for the academy another step closer to becoming a reality, while strengthening the ambition to “train to retain” skilled workers in the region.

The academy is expected to provide young people with access to high-quality specialist training and pathways to sustainable careers in the rail industry.

The project also comes as Ireland faces a growing demand for skilled railway technicians, with significant investment planned in the country’s rail infrastructure.

The development is being seen as an important opportunity for Kiltimagh and Mayo, potentially creating a long-term centre of excellence for railway skills, training and innovation in the region.
