The coming months are set to bring about seismic and unprecedented changes in the Gaelic games landscape in Mayo, with a whole raft of inter-county job vacancies to be filled and plenty of managers departing their roles.

In total, four roles have become available in the last month alone, leaving those in the corridors of power with plenty of head-scratching to do in order to promptly source replacements to lead the footballing landscape in 2026.

We’ll start with the two Senior gigs.

Mayo GAA have expressed their desire to have a new manager in place within the next 5-7 weeks, and if they are to get the ball rolling on that, they will need to do that fast with the swathe of senior jobs on offer throughout the country.

Liam McHale had shown interest in forming part of a backroom team for the Senior Men’s side; however, it is unclear if that is still the case after the former Mayo Ladies manager took over at Ardnaree Sarsfields.

Mayo LGFA are also headhunting a new appointment following McHale’s departure. It is likely they will also want to have their house in order prior to the commencement of their club championships.

Those aren’t the only positions that need to be filled. Last night (Monday, July 7), Mayo County Board confirmed that Under-20 boss Peadar Gardiner wouldn’t be seeking a one-year extension to his term, and would be stepping down.

Gardiner leaves on the back of provincial success, with Colm Boyle also leaving his position as Under-19 Development Team coach.

The Under-19 Development side is seen as a vital pathway for those making the step from playing minor football the previous year to the physicality of an age grade with players some three years older.

Speaking of Under-17 football, the hunt is also on for someone to lead the county’s minor footballers.

Joint managers David Heaney and Tom Reilly called time on their stint in the dugout, and there will likely be plenty of suitors for the chance to lead the Green and Red cubs next season.

Throw into that the Under-20 hurling job, and it looks set to be a hectic few months.
