It has been revealed that Mayo GAA Under-20 manager Peadar Gardiner has resigned as manager of the side.

At a meeting of the Mayo GAA County Board this evening (Monday, July 7), the County Board confirmed that Gardiner would be stepping away from the dugout following two years at the helm for 'personal reasons'.

Crossmolina club man Gardiner left the role having guided the side to Connacht glory in this year’s exciting and enthralling final against Roscommon in Tuam in May, ending a nine-year wait for provincial silverware.

He has also had a distinguished playing career in the Green and Red since his debut in 2001, playing in the 2006 All-Ireland final.

Gardiner, alongside a backroom team including Mark Ryan, Ger Cafferkey, and Keith Higgins, was appointed in August 2023, replacing outgoing U-20 main man Maurice Sheridan.

He had previously served on Sheridan’s backroom team. Gardiner's first season was, in truth, an underwhelming campaign as the side finished rock bottom of the Connacht Championship group stages; however produced a fine season to capture the JJ Fahy Cup in his second season.

Attention will now turn to who will step into the role following Gardiner’s departure, with a review into the Mayo U-20s on the agenda following the statement at Monday’s Mayo County Board meeting.
