AS the search for a manager of the Mayo senior team gets up and running, a former coach and star player has said he'd love to be involved with the team again.
Liam McHale who coached the team in Kevin McStay's first year in the hot-seat says there is huge potential in the current crop of players and told The Mayo News he'd love to work with the group again.
Speaking on Saturday afternoon after he stepped aside as manager of the Mayo Ladies following their championship win over Leitrim in Tubbercurry, McHale said he wasn't ruling anything out.
“I love sport and love coaching. I'll be around and will keep it going for as long as I can. I was delighted to go in (as coach of the Mayo men's team in 2023) and get to know the lads. I didn't know Aidan O'Shea and Cillian and Diarmuid and the boys and I really enjoyed getting to know them. If the right opportunity came up and they wanted me to go in coaching, I'd definitely go in. Those lads are so good I'd love to work with them again.”
McHale stepped away from McStay's management team at the end of the 2023 campaign and took charge of the Mayo Ladies team. He believes winning Sam Maguire is still a very achievable goal for the current Mayo team.
“I firmly believe the current group are definitely good enough to win the All-Ireland and isn't that what everybody's after. You can never rule anything out and I'd love to get involved with them again and help them win it.”
