Big win for small-scale Mayo trainer at Ballinrobe Races

There was a huge crowd as the final race meeting of the year took place at Ballinrobe Races.
Last Friday evening saw the final race meeting of the Ballinrobe Races and there was success for local connections.
In the second last race, which went to post at 6.40pm, Phoenix Arizona secured the victory in the Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Chase. At odds of 9/1, jockey Thomas O’Connor came home in front in the two mile, one furlong contest.
The winning trainer was John Cullen who is based in the Killala area of North Mayo.
Cullen, who currently has a handful of horses in his relatively small yard, saw his horse come home in front of the Barry Connell trained Farrokh. Cullen’s last racecourse success came at Sligo in October of last year when his horse, Cornmarket, secured victory.
The winning owners were a syndicate from The Harbour Bar which is a small bar located at Pullaheeney which overlooks the Killala Bay.
On Friday, a large crowd of both young and old made their way to the Mayo track when a superb evening of good weather ensured a big attendance.
