The project will increase treatment capacity by more than 50%, supporting future housing and commercial development in Claremorris

The major €17.9 million investment in Claremorris wastewater infrastructure has passed the halfway stage, with the project on track for completion in late 2027.

The upgrade to Claremorris Wastewater Treatment Plant began in October 2025 and is designed to increase capacity to meet the needs of the town’s growing population and support future development.

When completed, the works will increase the plant’s design capacity by more than 50%, from a population equivalent (PE) of 5,333 to 8,800.

The additional capacity will help facilitate new residential and commercial developments in Claremorris and its surrounding hinterland, supporting the town’s continued growth.

Patrick Greene, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said work on the project was progressing well.

“We have reached the mid-point of this significant upgrade to the plant, and we are delighted with how works have progressed to date,” he said. “This is a major investment in the wastewater infrastructure of Claremorris, which will deliver a range of benefits for local communities.”

Mr Greene said the upgraded infrastructure would also help protect the local environment and receiving waters by modernising treatment processes.

The improvements are intended to support biodiversity conservation and ensure compliance with obligations under the Water Framework Directive.

The project includes upgrades to the plant’s inlet and aeration systems, the construction of a new settlement tank and improvements to sludge treatment and handling facilities.

The works are being carried out by Veolia on behalf of Uisce Éireann and are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Uisce Éireann said the investment would provide the wastewater infrastructure needed to support Claremorris and surrounding communities into the future.

It also said it would continue to keep the local community and other stakeholders informed as the project progresses towards completion.
