'One of life's true gentlemen' - Tributes pour in for Mayo teacher

A huge sadness has descended upon Mayo communities as former Irish and geography teacher John McLoughlin passed away on Sunday.
John McLoughlin of Ard na Greine, Ballina Rd, Crossmolina, and formerly Glencoe, Achill passed away on October 25.
He worked as a teacher at St Brendan’s College Belmullet. The school he worked at for so many years, published a heartfelt tribute:
“Our entire school community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and former teacher of Irish and Geography, John McLoughlin.
John was a truly kind, thoughtful, intelligent and caring teacher who made a lasting impression on generations of students and colleagues alike.
He had a genuine love of education and a deep interest in the development of young people. His ideas on teaching and learning were often years ahead of their time. John brought warmth, wisdom, understanding and a genuine interest in the people around him.
He had a wonderful ability to engage with others, to share his thoughts and ideas, and to encourage people to look at things from a different perspective.”
Many comments poured in underneath the post, sharing condolences, prayers and memories of John’s teaching days.
Maurice Lynch commented: “He was one of life's true gentlemen.”
User Margaret Grogan wrote: “So sorry to hear of Johns passing. Lovely neighbour and friend.”
And Bernadette O’Donnell said: “So sorry and sad to hear of John’s passing. Remember the lovely days growing up in Glencoe with you.”
Martina Smyth remembered: “He was a lovely teacher”.
His influence extended far beyond the subjects he taught, and his contribution to the lives of his students and colleagues will not be forgotten.
The message from St Brendan’s stated: “Even long after his retirement, we were always delighted to welcome John back to our school. His visits were something we all looked forward to, providing an opportunity to catch up, share stories and enjoy his company.
It was a testament to the deep connection he maintained with the school and the people who were fortunate enough to work alongside him.
John was much more than a former colleague; he was a friend to our school community, and his passing leaves us with a profound sense of sadness.
We will remember him with great affection, gratitude and respect, and we will always value the wisdom, kindness and friendship he shared with us over the years.”
Remains reposing at Hiney’s Funeral Home Crossmolina, on Wednesday, October 28, from 4pm with removal at 6pm to St Tiernan’s Church. Requiem Mass on Thursday, October 29, at noon. Burial afterwards at Crossmolina Cemetery.
