RIP: Mayo woman's death brings wave of sadness at home and in America

MARGARET Egan (née Godfrey), Kilvine, Irishtown,

MARGARET Egan (née Godfrey), Kilvine, Irishtown, Mayo and formerly of Hartford, Connecticut, died peacefully in the kind care of the staff in Sonas Nursing Home, Knock.

Margaret, who was in her 98th year, spent the vast part of her life in Hartford, a place that became home to several people from the general Irishtown region over the decades.

She was held in the highest regard by all who knew her and had a lovely way of recalling memories from her childhood and delighting friends in Hartford with tales from the ‘old country’.

John and Helen Fitzgerald, New York, were among those paying tribute to Margaret. “She was a very special lady and the last remaining member of the Kilvine meitheal in Hartford that were always so generous to home.

"We fondly remember our trips to Hartford to visit the Egan family.”

Another friend, Barbara Bigos, shared this reflection. “I have such fond memories of sitting at the table with a cuppa and listening to her stories.

"She was such a special person whose smile would always light up the room.”

Reposing was in Carey’s Funeral Home, Ballindine, and interment took place in Irishtown Cemetery following Requiem Mass in Irishtown Church.

Margaret, who was predeceased by her husband Jack and son-in-law Douglas, will be fondly remembered by her family, Cathy, Johnny, Bernadette, Julie and Betsy, sons-in-law Jim, Brian and Tom, grandchildren John, Maeve, Sheridan, Delaney, Maggie, Máire, Burke and Tadgh, sister-in-law Mary, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
