A planning application submitted to Mayo County Council by Bridgestock Care Ltd for the development of an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre in Ballyhaunis has prompted reactions from local representatives.
Fine Gael Councillor Alma Gallagher has voiced her opposition to the proposed development.
“As a public representative living in Ballyhaunis, I am strongly opposed to this proposal,” Cllr Gallagher said.
“This is a brand-new build development and therefore does not qualify under Section 5 of the Planning and Development Act 2000, which applies only to certain exempted developments. It must go through full planning permission, with proper scrutiny and public consultation.”
Cllr Gallagher also raised concerns about local infrastructure, saying further development could place additional pressure on existing services.
“We need investment, not further strain on already stretched resources,” she said
Minister Alan Dillon said he recognises the concerns expressed by Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce and members of the local community.
“Ballyhaunis has a proud tradition of welcoming people from all backgrounds, but the community has made clear that local services are now stretched to capacity,” he said.
“I will continue to advocate for balanced regional planning and ensure that Ballyhaunis is not unfairly burdened without the necessary supports in place.”
Aontú Deputy Paul Lawless also commented on the proposal.
“Ballyhaunis has always been a welcoming town, but we must be honest about capacity,” he said.
“Our local GP services are overstretched, school places are limited, the local garda station is effectively closed to the public and housing pressures are already immense. Adding additional demand without proper support will have a real and lasting impact on the whole community, including those seeking protection,” he added
The planning application from Bridgestock Care Ltd is currently under consideration by Mayo County Council. The decision is due to be made on the application in the early days of 2026.
