Figures have revealed that Mayo has received over €6.3 million in Vacant Property Refurbishment Grants so far this year.
The figures, published by the Minister for Housing James Browne, show that the €6,736,180 received by Mayo County Council places the Council as the fifth-highest recipient of the grant in 2025 to date.

In total, 818 applications were received in the county, with 541 being approved thus far. 57 of those applications have been rejected.
230 applications have not been fully processed at present. In total, 128 have been issued as the works have been completed.
Nationally, over €155 million has been awarded by the Department of Housing in 2025 as part of the grant.
Minister Browne has welcomed the number of homes which have been refurbished as part of the scheme.
“We are in a crisis situation, and I am determined to pull every lever at my disposal to get things moving and get houses that are lying there underused or unused to become desperately needed homes,” he stated.
“I am pleased at the serious impact the vacant property refurbishment grant delivers,” Minister Browne continued. “The good work shown by this grant continues to grow, with the increase in payments reflecting the fact that more vacant and derelict properties are being brought back into use across the country. I take a very firm, indeed grim, view of any properties left to lie vacant at this point in time.”
