The late Private Billy Kedian
A commemorative ceremony will take place in Ballyhaunis this Saturday, in honour of Private (Pte) Billy Kedian.
The native of the East Mayo town died 25 years ago while on peacekeeping duties in Lebanon at just 22 years of age.
Pte Kedian’s family, defence forces comrades, local representatives and friends will be present at Saturday’s event, which commences at 12pm. Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill will be in attendance representing the Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Micháel Martin.
Pte Kedian’s bravery was displayed when his post was under fire in Lebanon, and he voluntarily risked his own personal safety to ensure the security and safety of his comrades by waking and directing them to the bunkers.
Unfortunately, it was at this stage that Pte Kedian was hit with shrapnel from an 81mm mortar round. His bravery saved the lives of 14 young men.
The Defence Forces have yet to honour his heroic deed, which his family and comrades see as a ‘huge disappointment’.
Last month in the Seanad, Senator Gerard Craughwell spoke to Cathaoirleach Jerry Buttimer about the issue of the lack of commemoration for veterans.
Speaking about the event, Senator Craughwell explained he had requested an Army Band, tents, and an honour guard, but none were provided.
“The first reply I got was that I would have to indemnify the Minister to the tune of six and a half million euro, the second reply I got was that there would be no band, we could have a bugle and a drum, and the third one I got was there will be no honour,” stated the Senator.
The Independent Senator asked each house member of this to put on ‘as much pressure as they can’. “There are hundreds and hundreds of veterans who want to go and commemorate Billy, his family want to be there, the very least we can do. We never give him a medal. He lost his life-saving his comrade, and we never gave him a medal.
“I could go on and on and on about what we don't do for our veterans, it's just wrong in every sense of the word,” said Senator Craughwell.
Mayo County Council passed a motion in 2023 to celebrate and allocate funds for the erection of a commemorative plaque in his hometown.
Those who were closest to Pte Kedian set up the Friends of private Billy Kedian Crowdfunding Page in order to help with the funding of the memorial.
Guests who wish to be bussed to the memorial are advised to arrive at the car park at Eircode F35 KA61 by 11.40pm.
