Croke Park awaits next week for large Mayo contingent as UL win thrilling Sigerson semi final

Ballina's Frank Irwin was among the prominent UL players as they defeated Queen's University in a thriller.

Next Wednesday evening will see a heavy Mayo contingent embark on Croke Park as the Sigerson Cup final takes place. 

This evening, (Friday) saw UL and Queens University battle it out in the semi final which saw an action packed clash which took place in Abbotstown. It was the University of Limerick side packed with Mayo players who claimed victory on a scoreline of 3-23 to Queen’s 2-21 after extra time. With 60 minutes played, the scoreboard read UL 3-13, Queen’s 1-19.

On the UL team, a large Mayo contingent led the way as the Limerick based students came from behind to force extra time. Kerry’s Cathal Brosnan produced an outstanding finish late on in normal time as his effort flew into the top corner of the net in spectacular fashion. 

On the UL team, Sean Morahan (Castlebar Mitchels), Hugh O’Loughlin (Kllmaine), Conal Dawson (Westport), Cathal Keaveney (Parke), Cian McHale (Moy Davitts), Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites) and Jack Melvin (Davitts) all featured while Dylan O’Brien (Davitts), Cathal Corless (Davitts), Diarmuid Coggins (Crossmolina) were among the substitutes. Garrymore’s Eoin McGreal missed out through injury while Colm McHale (Moy Davitts) is also part of the UL panel.

The students from Mayo contributed heavily to the scoreboard as Cian McHale kicked 1-8 (1tp), Frank Irwin 0-4 (1tp), Conal Dawson 0-3 (1tp) and Sean Morahan 0-1. 

The Sigerson Cup Final will take place next Wednesday evening (February 11) in Croke Park as UL go up against UCC who are stacked with talent from Cork and Kerry primarily.
