Boyfriend crashed car while drink driving

A Foxford man who was already banned from driving crashed his girlfriend’s car while over four times the legal limit

A Foxford man who was over four times the legal driving limit has been disqualified from driving for six years.
Peter Wimsey of 23, St Nathy’s Cottages, Foxford, pleaded guilty to drink driving after he crashed his girlfriend’s car on November 9, 2014, at Belgarrow, Foxford.
Castlebar District Court heard that Mr Wimsey was not insured at the time of the collision and was driving without a licence, as he was banned from driving at the time.
Gardaí attended the scene on the night and arrested Mr Wimsey. A subsequent blood test showed a reading of 232mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
The court heard that Mr Wimsey had two previous convictions, one for failing to wear a seatbelt and another for drink driving, which he had been disqualified from driving for at the time of this incident.
Defending solicitor William O’Connor told the court that his client was a ‘hard-working individual’ and had arranged to go to a party with his girlfriend in Swinford on the night in question.
Mr O’Connor said his client was unable to get any contact numbers for taxis after the party, and that a subsequent taxi he rang told the couple it would be a three-hour wait.
Following this, the couple rang a relative in Swinford who was also unable to bring them home.
The court heard the car that Mr Wimsey crashed belonged to his girlfriend and that he had fully cooperated with gardaí.
Judge James Faulkner convicted Wimsey of drink driving, fining him €500 and disqualifying from driving for six years. Mr Wimsey was also convicted of driving without insurance and was fined €300. The judge took the matter of driving without a driving licence into consideration.
