Twenty-year-old driver banned from driving after performing ‘doughnuts’ on busy Castlebar-Galway road
A TWENTY year old who was charged with dangerous driving after performing ‘doughnuts’ in a ‘field car’ he just bought received a two-year driving ban at last week’s sitting of Castlebar District Court.
Nathan Geraghty of Cortoon, Shrule, was reported to gardaí after he doing the driving manoeuvre on the N84, within ten to twelve metres of another vehicle on October 19, 2014, at 6.05pm.
The court heard that Mr Geraghty had just bought the 1999-registered Lexus for €450 the day before, and he was not insured. He described the car as a ‘field car’, saying it was not for the road.
Judge Mary Devins also heard that Mr Geraghty was also stopped while driving an untaxed van on December 9, 2014.
His solicitor, Tom Walsh, said his client had worked in the sawmill in Corr na Mona and was the youngest of six children. Mr Walsh said that Geraghty was 19 at the time and foolish, and that he had never been in trouble before.
Judge Mary Devins said he could have killed someone, and while agreeing, Mr Walsh said there was nothing sinister about him.
Judge Devins disqualified him from driving for two years and fined him €450.
