Dara Calleary highlights need for greater supports for SMEs in new role as Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation
Calleary appointed Spokesperson on Jobs

Mayo TD Dara Calleary has been appointed Fianna FΡil Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation following a reorganisation of the Fianna FΡil Front Bench. Deputy Calleary was formerly the party’s Spokesperson on Justice, Defence and Equality, a position that has now been given to Niall Collins.
Fianna FΡil Leader MicheΡl Martin sees policy development within the area of jobs, enterprise and innovation as key for Fianna FΡil. “Job creation is a top priority for Fianna FΡil,” he said, “and I am delighted that Dara Calleary is taking over such a crucial area of responsibility within the party. Never has it been more important to invest in supporting local businesses and attracting more foreign investment to create high value jobs.”
Deputy Calleary is keen to focus on, among other things, supports for small to medium-sized enterprises. “The SME sector is the back bone of our economy and will be the key to the sustainable economic growth of communities around the country,” said Deputy Calleary.
Calleary, who believes the Government has made ‘no meaningful effort’ to support SMEs, argued that small businesses in Mayo and around the country need support from the Government and from banks in order to ‘keep their doors open’.
“We are still in a situation where viable businesses are being crippled by exorbitant rents and high operating costs but many cannot get the credit they need to stay afloat”.
