Just days into 2011 and the casualty list among businesses in the region continues to grow fast
Ballyhaunis, Milltown and Galway see business closures as gloom spreads
Michael Commins
JUST days into 2011 and the casualty list among businesses in the region continues to grow apace. Last weekend saw the closure of Donnellan’s Texaco Filling Station and Shop at Ballinlough Road, Ballyhaunis. Signs alerting customers to the news of the closure were put in place on Friday. The premises was regarded as one of the busiest in Ballyhaunis and news of its closure came as a major surprise to many throughout the area. Its closure sees the loss of a number of jobs in the town. Earlier in the week came the news of the closure of the N17 Electrical and Hardware Stores in Milltown and Galway. The vast complex just on the Ballindine side of Milltown attracted shoppers from over a wide area and especially from counties Galway and Mayo and parts of west Roscommon. The venture was pioneered by Tuam businessman Tom Naughton. It is understood that in the region of 40 jobs have been lost through the closures. Yesterday (Monday), another popular and long established Galway business went into receivership. Zhivago Records, which has two stores in Galway, announced it was closing too.
