CASTLEBAR Town Council decided to adjourn its monthly meeting as a mark of respect to the late former member of Castlebar Town Council, Liam Coady. Mayor of Castlebar, Ger Deere gave a tearful account of his interactions with Cody over the years at an emotional Town Council meeting and was visibly shaken while giving his eulogy. Words of sympathy were extended to his wife Kathleen and daughter Regina at the monthly meeting which saw cross party sympathy for the popular Castlebar man’s family. “Castlebar has lost a great ambassador. I have lost a friend, a colleague and a confidant. Liam Coady didn’t just believe in Christian values, he lived them every day,“ said Mayor Deere. In conflict to comments made by Independent Town Councillor Frank Durkan, Ger Deere stated, “I think there is a place for nice people in politic. Coady made a hugh difference to all our lives.” Frank Durkan in his homage to Coady said, “he was too nice for politics, we had our differences but he wore that chain - as Mayor - with dignity. He comes from two very well respected families and is a great loss to the town and the party.” Mr Coady, from Knockthomas in Castlebar, who passed away last month was, at the time of his death, the official driver for Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny,. He was also Mayor of the Town Council for two years during his career in politics. Mr Coady was on holidays in London at the time of his sudden death. “He was a very genuine man that would look at both sides of a story and I never heard him criticise anyone, he had great interest in the town and there were so many all over the country that knew him so well. He was a real gentleman and my sympathies go to his wife, daughter and all his family,” said Independent Town Councillor, Michael Kilcoyne. Fianna FΡil Town and County Councillor, Blackie Galvin said Coady was ‘a true gentleman by nature a great man, and a Castlebar man’. “I knew Liam when we were growing up. He loved a pint and on a recent trip to the DΡil he was delighted to meet people from his own county. Liam was always available for the council no matter what.” The adjourned monthly meeting of Castlebar Town Council will now be taking place today, Tuesday, September 14.
