POLL-topping county councillor Patsy O’Brien has tallied over 4,000 votes in the Claremorris Local Electoral Area, beating constituency rival Martina Jennings (Fine Gael) in many key areas.

Cllr O’Brien (Independent) tallied 4,292 first preference votes out of 14,293 (30 percent) in the Claremorris LEA, where he topped the poll in the June local elections.

The Robeen-based representative tallied 5,194 in total across the five Mayo electoral areas (7 percent). It is expected that Cllr O’Brien could attract a large number of transfers from Ms Jennings, who has tallied 2,514 in Claremorris (18 percent) and 3,454 across the county (5 percent).

Cllr O’Brien seems to have comfortably out-tallied Ms Jennings in her home area of Lissatava, tallying 96 first preferences versus 59 for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice CEO.

Cllr O’Brien also comfortably tallied more than Ms Jennings in his native Robeen and Hollymount Community Centre and Roundfort NS.

The south Mayo candidates tallied the exact same percentage as was recorded in a TG4 poll of the Mayo constituency taken before the election.

Knock-based Aontú councillor Paul Lawless has attracted the third-highest number of tallies in the Claremorris LEA, with 1,858 first preferences.

Fine Gael’s Minister Alan Dillon and Fianna Fáil’s Lisa Chambers both tallied over 1,100 votes each in the Claremorris LEA, attracting 8 percent each while Rose Conway-Walsh tallied 943 votes.

Deputy Conway-Walsh is in contention to top the poll in Mayo with over 10,000 first preference votes with tallies completed in all five electoral areas in the county.
