Mayo man accused of forging cheques and theft of over €60,000

A Newport man appeared in court charged with a total of 68 counts which included 34 counts of theft and 34 counts of forgery

A Mayo man appeared in court accused of forging cheques and the theft of over €60,000

A West Mayo man appeared in court where he is accused of cashing forged cheques and the theft of over €60,000 from one man.

Padraic Ryder (32) of Kilbride, Newport appeared before Castlebar District Court where he was charged with a total of 68 counts which included 34 counts of theft and 34 counts of forgery. It is alleged that Mr Ryder forged cheques in the name of another man and withdrew €61,181.50 in cash on dates between October 2022 and May 2025 with the majority of the withdrawals taking place at the AIB branch in Westport.

Court presenter, Sergeant John Reilly told Judge Sandra Murphy that the DPP had directed trial on indictment in the circuit court with consent to a signed plea.

Sgt Reilly applied for Mr Ryder to be remanded on bail to appear before Castlebar District Court in May for service of the book of evidence.

Mr Dermot Morahan, solicitor for Mr Ryder applied for legal aid saying that given the seriousness of the charges his client was a suitable candidate. Sgt Reilly said there were no State objections to the legal aid application.

Judge Murphy granted legal aid along with a disclosure order to Mr Morahan and remanded Mr Ryder on bail to Castlebar District Court on May 20 for service of the book of evidence.
