Long-serving Fianna Fáil councillor Blackie Gavin has not confirmed if he will stand for Dáil Éireann Pic: Michael McLaughlin
LONG-serving county councillor Blackie Gavin has played down talk of a run for Dáil Éireann.
Responding to an article in The Connaught Telegraph which suggested he may stand in the next general election, Cllr Gavin declined to confirm if he would stand for the Dáil.
Mayo has been allocated an extra TD since the redrawing of the constituency boundaries restored the entire county as a five-seater.
However, Cllr Gavin’s name may not be among those vying for the extra seat the next time the country goes to the polls.
“A lot of people have said that to me on the doorstep, I said look it, I have to get elected to Mayo County Council first,” the Fianna Fáil councillor said when asked about his intentions by The Mayo News.
Cllr Gavin received 1,779 first-preference votes at the last local election in 2019, taking 12.8 percent of the vote.
He was first elected to Mayo County Council in 2009 and previously served on Castlebar Town Council.
In June, he will be standing alongside sitting councillors Al McDonnell and Martin McLoughlin in the Castlebar Local Electoral Area.
