Belmullet councillor Seán Carey
Belmullet-based councillor Seán Carey is expected to be elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council at the annual general meeting this Friday.
The Fianna Fáil councillor is expected to be nominated to hold the chain of office and replace the current incumbent, Bonniconlon-based councillor John O'Hara.
A pact between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael following last year's local elections means that the two big parties will share the office of Cathaoirleach of the Council and the four Municipal Districts over the five year term.
Fine Gael councillor John O'Hara served as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council for the last 12 months which means that a Fianna Fáil councillor will wear the chain for the next 12 months.
Cllr Carey is understood to be Fianna Fáil's first choice to become Cathaoirleach with the Belmullet-based farmer expected to accept the role.
Cllr Carey was first elected as a councillor in 2019 and held off the challenge of Sinn Féin candidate Rosaleen Lally to retain his seat. He is the current Cathaoirleach of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District, a position he has held on two previous occasions.
The AGM of Mayo County Council will take place in Áras an Chontae in Castlebar on Friday with the position of leas-Cathaoirleach expected to be filled by a Fine Gael nominee.
