Two Mayo All Ireland winners impress for University of Limerick

There has been a lot of eyes on the third level games as they feature the proposed rule changes that are on trial
Last night, there were two Mayo men involved in the University of Limerick side who had a fine win over University College Cork in the Ryan Cup (Higher Education league competition) which occurs before the Sigerson Cup which gets underway in early 2027.
The Limerick based students went all the way in the Sigerson competition last year as a heavy Mayo presence helped them secure a first ever win in the prestigious competition.
This season has seen growing interest in the Ryan Cup competition, with much of the attention centred on the proposed rule changes being trialled during the midweek third-level games. Among the rule changes being trialled are the awarding of four points for a goal, a limit of three consecutive handpasses in possession, and a ban on fisted points.
Last night, Thursday, October 22 saw UL go up against UCC in Limerick and it was the Limerick based students who came out on top winning 2-18 (26) to 1-16 (20). In UL’s win, Mayo All Ireland winners Conal Dawson and Frank Irwin started for David Power’s side. Dawson caught the eye at wing-forward as the Westport man kicked three excellent two pointers in the early stages of the second half while Ballina’s Irwin caught the eye in the full-forward line.
Elsewhere, the University of Galway have named Aghamore’s Tom O’Flaherty as their team captain for the season. Claremorris man Dara Hurley has been impressing in recent games for the side who is managed by former Mayo player and U-20 manager Maurice Sheridan.
