Newly appointed Galway manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice is set to bring a former Mayo club manager into his backroom team. Kerry native Fitzmaurice was recently appointed as manager of the Tribesmen after Padraic Joyce stepped down from the role.

First reported in the Irish Examiner, former Ballintubber manager Kevin Johnston is set to join Fitzmaurice’s management team. Johnston, a native of Sligo led Ballintubber to back to back county titles in 2018 and 2019.

In 2021, he led Tourlestrane to the Sligo Senior Championship and in recent years, Johnston managed Corofin in Galway. He also coached Salthill-Knocknacarra and Mountbellew Moylough previously. He was also involved in the victorious Leitrim Gaels side who last season claimed the spoils in the Leitrim Senior Championship last season.

Earlier this year saw Johnston take on the managerial role with the Galway U-20 footballers. In recent weeks, the secondary school teacher added Corofin legend and current Ballinrobe coach Kieran Fitzgerald to the U-20 management team but it was reported today, October 15 that Johnson is to depart the role.

Former Galway footballers Gary O’Donnell and Gareth Bradshaw are also set to join Fitzmaurice at the helm along with Corofin’s Frank Morris. UEFA Pro Licence holder Lisa Fallon who has previously managed Galway United men’s team and coached Chelsea women is also part of Fitzmaurice’s ticket. Fallon who has previously featured as a soccer pundit on RTÉ was also part of Jim Gavin’s management team.
