Mourners gathered in abundance at the Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar to bid a fond farewell to Danielle Mulcahy, a 27-year-old woman who left a lasting impact on her community and loved ones.

Mourners gathered in large numbers at the Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar today to bid a fond farewell to Danielle Mulcahy of Rathbawn Grove, Castlebar.

Danielle, aged 27, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at Mayo University Hospital on Sunday, October 11, leaving her family, friends and all who knew her heartbroken.

The large crowds who attended her funeral Mass and gathered to offer their condolences reflected the deep affection and esteem in which Danielle was held by her community and all those whose lives she touched.

Fr Conal Eustace welcomed the congregation, acknowledging both members of the local community and those who had travelled long distances to pay their respects and support Danielle’s grieving family.

He then invited Mylo to introduce a collection of personal items chosen to represent Danielle’s life, personality and the things she held dear.

Jade presented Danielle’s lip liner, a symbol of her love of make-up and fashion and her desire to always look her very best.

Anne brought forward Danielle’s apron from Café Rua, where she had worked for seven years. Her job at the café was a particularly special part of her life, and she cherished the friendships she formed with her colleagues and the connections she built with customers.

David presented Danielle’s hot water bottle, representing her love of home comforts, while Conor brought forward her set of dumbbells, reflecting her love of the gym and her seemingly endless supply of energy.

Killian presented Danielle’s hair rollers, another reminder of her love of styling her hair, while Wello brought forward a teddy bear, symbolising the special relationship they shared and Danielle’s softer, more affectionate side.

Following the presentation of the symbols, Bernie delivered a heartfelt eulogy, sharing treasured memories of Danielle.

“Anyone who knew her will know that she had a personality that could light up a room. She was always smiling, always jolly, and had a laugh that was truly infectious,” she told the congregation.

Bernie spoke movingly of the love Danielle shared with her family and friends, and the profound love and support they had given her throughout her life.

Addressing Danielle’s mother, Kathleen, she said: “You raised a clever, independent, kind-hearted, caring, fun-loving, and hard-working daughter. Danielle is an absolute credit to you.”

She praised Kathleen for the strength and bravery she had shown in the days following her daughter’s sudden passing, adding that Danielle’s love for her, and the person she had helped her become, would live on in everyone who knew her.

Turning to Danielle’s father, Danny, Bernie spoke of the striking resemblance between father and daughter, both in appearance and personality.

“There was never any mistaking Danielle for anybody but your daughter. She is the image of you,” she said.

Bernie also paid tribute to Danielle’s sisters, Emma and Nydia, describing them as not only her siblings but her best friends and confidantes.

Bernie said she purposely left Danielle's brother JP until last because the bond he shared with his sister was 'a package deal'.

“More like twins than siblings, as you said yourself JP. The bond ye shared was something truly special and it wasn't just about being brother and sister, it was a connection that belonged only to the two of you. You just knew each other. JP, losing your sister means losing someone who has been a part of your life from the very beginning. Someone who shared your childhood, your memories, your family and so much of what makes you who you are today.”

She spoke fondly of Danielle’s love for her nephews, AJ, Leo, Jaden and Milo, and her niece, Malia, as well as the treasured memories she shared with her wider family, including her cousin Jade.

She also acknowledged Danielle’s relationship with her partner, Wello. Together, they had already created many happy memories and had so many plans and adventures still ahead of them.

A particularly poignant part of the eulogy was Bernie’s tribute to Danielle’s friends, who showed extraordinary love and friendship in the hours following her passing. She spoke of those who helped Emma and Nydia by doing Danielle’s hair and makeup and tending to the little details that allowed her family and friends to see her as they remembered her.

“Nobody should ever have to do what you did for your friend, Danielle. And yet in doing so, you gave her family and friends one final precious gift,” Bernie said.

Bernie also spoke of Danielle’s love of her job at Cafe Rua and how much they loved her.

“She cherished her job at Rua, and it was clear to everyone how happy she was there,” she said.

Closing the tribute, Bernie emphasised how loved Danielle was and how she will be missed more than words can ever express.

Danielle is predeceased by her grandparents, Marie and Joey Mulcahy.

She will be deeply missed by her heartbroken parents, Kathleen and Daniel; her sisters, Nadian and Emma; her brother, JP; her grandparents, Ethna and PJ O’Gara of Ballindine; her aunts, Anne and Joanne; her uncles, Darren, Carlos, Barry and Patrick; her niece, Maleeah; her nephews, AJ, Leo, Jayden and Mylo; her boyfriend, Wello; her work colleagues at Café Rua; and her many relatives and friends.

Following the Mass, Danielle was laid to rest in Castlebar New Cemetery.

May she rest in peace.
