Porter House rules for victorious Mayo players

Management of famous Westport pub proudly welcome Sam Maguire and All-Ireland champions
The celebrations continued in Westport last Tuesday morning as The Porter House Bar proudly welcomed the Sam Maguire Cup and members of Mayo’s All-Ireland-winning senior football team, management and backroom staff, for a well-earned stop following their historic triumph.
After 75 long years, Sam Maguire was finally home in Mayo, making the arrival at The Porter House an especially emotional and memorable occasion for everyone present.
For the proprietors, Joe and Marian O’Malley, it was a day they will never forget.
The Porter House was reserved exclusively for the team, giving the squad an opportunity to relax, enjoy a few quiet drinks together and relive the unforgettable All-Ireland final as the match played once again across the screens. The room was filled with laughter, stories and plenty of pride as the lads reflected on a day that has etched their names forever into Ireland’s sporting history.
The atmosphere throughout the afternoon was nothing short of electric, yet intimate – a fitting setting for a team that has brought so much joy to the county.
“It was a true honour to welcome the Mayo team and the Sam Maguire Cup to The Porter House,” Joe and Marian O’Malley said afterwards. “To be the first pub in Mayo to have the cup visit after such a tremendous achievement is something we are incredibly proud of.
“After waiting 75 years to see Sam Maguire return home, it made the occasion even more special. It was wonderful to see the lads enjoying themselves, watching back the match and taking in what they’ve accomplished. It’s a game that the people of Ireland will be talking about for years to come, and we couldn’t be prouder of this incredible group of players, management and backroom staff for what they have achieved.”
As the team prepared to continue their journey, Joe made sure the players were well looked after before thanking them on behalf of his family and staff.
“You’ve done Mayo proud,” he told the squad. “The pride you’ve given this county is hard to put into words. From Marian and myself, our family and everyone across our businesses – thank you for giving us memories that will last a lifetime. It was a privilege to welcome you here today, and our doors will always be open to you.”
As the team prepared to leave, word had spread throughout the town and crowds gathered outside The Porter House for a chance to catch a glimpse of the famous Sam Maguire Cup. Supporters lined the street, applauding and waving as the Mayo players emerged, with many eager to capture a photograph of the treasured trophy that had finally returned home after 75 years.
As the team bus pulled away to a chorus of cheers and waves from the crowd gathered outside, there was a real sense that something truly special had taken place in the heart of Westport. It was an afternoon filled with pride, gratitude and genuine Mayo hospitality – one that Joe, Marian and everyone at The Porter House will treasure for many years to come.
