Mayo players bring Westport to a standstill with an almighty homecoming
Crowds go crazy as they celebrate Mayo GAA All-Ireland win in Westport
The All-Ireland football champions unforgettably began their Mayo homecoming tour last night, receiving a rapturous welcome from thousands of supporters at MacHale Park as the county celebrated its historic success.
Following the celebrations in Castlebar, the team travelled to Westport, where packed streets and cheering crowds provided another incredible reception. The squad then made its way to Knockranny House Hotel for a celebratory meal before the festivities continued into the early hours on Bridge Street, with supporters joining the players in celebrating a memorable victory.
After spending the night at The Grace, the All-Ireland champions awoke to yet another warm welcome, with fans gathering outside the hotel to catch a glimpse of the Sam Maguire Cup and congratulate the players.
The homecoming tour now heads to Ballyhaunis, where what organisers are calling “the biggest party Ballyhaunis has ever seen” is set to get underway from 4.00 pm on Main Street.
Captain Jack Coyne, Keith Higgins, and the All-Ireland-winning Mayo football team will receive a civic-style welcome, with live music from The Halez before and after the team's arrival. Main Street has been closed to traffic since 9.00 am to facilitate the celebrations, while spectators are being encouraged to use the designated park-and-walk facilities at Ballyhaunis GAA Club, Ballyhaunis Rugby Club, Ballyhaunis Community School, and the Old Fas Yard.
Organisers are also asking supporters to allow extra time for their journey, follow the directions of event stewards and An Garda Síochána, and help give Jack, Keith, the players and management the homecoming reception they richly deserve.
