Horse owners from across Mayo gather in Mulranny for hands-on training focused on trust, communication and building safer partnerships with horses

A unique natural horsemanship workshop has brought horse owners and riders from across the region together at Mulranny Beach, Westport.

Hosted by Wild Atlantic Horsemanship, the event marked the second successful workshop featuring renowned Chilean horse trainer Paul Walker, who has more than 30 years’ experience working with wild horses in Chile.

The hands-on workshop focused on developing trust, communication and stronger partnerships between horses and their handlers, with participants given the opportunity to explore practical approaches to common challenges.

One of the highlights was a live demonstration involving an unbroken filly. Walker demonstrated how leadership and trust can be established from the ground up without relying on fear, before progressing towards ridden work.

Walker’s calm and practical approach is based on an understanding of equine psychology and reflects the principles of renowned trainer John Lyons. His methods emphasise clear communication, consistency and softness, with the aim of helping horses become safer and more willing partners.

“Good horsemanship is built on leadership, respect and trust,” Walker said. “When a horse understands you and trusts you, training becomes clearer, safer and better for both horse and handler.”

The interactive nature of the workshop also allowed participants to raise questions and discuss issues specific to their own horses. Topics included trailer loading, dealing with spookiness and developing confidence between horse and handler.

Organisers said the strong turnout and demand for the event have already prompted plans for a Level 2 follow-up workshop, with horse owners advised to book early when dates are announced.
