72-bedroom Wyatt Hotel expansion approved despite earlier objections in Westport

Planning permission granted for major development works at Mayo hotel

The plans were subject to 13 conditions

Mayo County Council has granted planning permission for major development works at The Wyatt Hotel. Approval has been given to The Wyatt Hotel Unlimited for the construction of a three-storey extension, providing 72 additional bedrooms.

The development will also involve alterations to a number of existing bedrooms, the creation of 88 new basement car-parking spaces, and the provision of a further 20 car-parking spaces on Church Street.

In addition, the existing goods delivery set-down area will be relocated from Church Street to Lower Peter Street.

Six ground-floor bedrooms will be converted to expand the existing dining area, while further alterations will be carried out to the lower ground-floor car park. These works will involve the demolition of three existing staff habitable terraced dwelling houses.

The development will also include the construction of a new public pedestrian pathway linking Church Street with the Leisure Centre car park.

The decision follows earlier objections to the project, with concerns previously raised that the development would not benefit the people of Westport, as reported by The Mayo News at the time.

Kieran Ryan of Ballinlough, Kilmeena, claimed that there was an 'overdevelopment of hospitality' in Westport, and this was resulting in a housing crisis.
