The Westport Diocese is putting the call out for priests to join them to celebrate one of the biggest days in the Mayo calendar.

On Sunday, July 27, thousands of people from all corners of Ireland and further afield will scale Croagh Patrick to celebrate the time-honoured tradition of Reek Sunday.

The event is one which has been celebrated for over 1600 years, and this year, priests are being asked to come along and help to administer the sacraments.

Those priests who are interested are advised to contact Father John Kenny of the Westport Parish on 087 2401533.

“As Reek Sunday is the largest annual gathering on the mountain, it is essential that Reek Sunday pilgrims, and indeed all pilgrims, play their part in respecting the mountain,” he stated.

“In this context, I am highlighting that we all have a responsibility to share in the protection of the mountain’s fragile ecosystem, and I encourage all climbers to stay on the Pilgrim’s Path.  This request is made in the interest of the safety of climbers themselves, to preserve the mountain's habitat, and to sustain this special pilgrimage for future generations.”

On Garland Friday (July 25), the local pilgrimage will begin at 10 am, with Mass on the summit at 7.30 pm.

On Reek Saturday (July 26), the Tochar Phádraigh Pilgrims of Hope Jubilee Pilgrimage will begin at 8.30am at Ballintubber Abbey. At 6.30pm, a Vigil Mass will take place in Saint Mary’s Church, Westport.

On Reek Sunday (July 27), Masses will be celebrated from 8am on the summit, with confessions available from 7.30am.
