The school, in Westport, has been nominated for a raft of accolades in the Our World Awards, which take place in Dublin Castle

Mayo school shortlisted for ten awards at national ceremony

Students of the Holy Trinity National School in Westport will travel to the Our World Awards in Dublin Castle on May 30.

Fifth and sixth class students from Holy Trinity National School will be packing their schoolbags and heading from Mayo to Dublin later this month for the Our World Awards.

The school, based in Westport, will be in the running for a massive ten awards at the event, which will take place in Dublin Castle on Friday, May 30.

The list of awards is as follows:

  • School of the Year
  • Global Goals
  • Irish Aid Programme
  • Rising Star Creative Star
  • STEM
  • School and Community Impact
  • Global Citizenship Education
  • An Iontráil Ghaeilge is Fearr
  • Outstanding School Engagement Awards

The Westport pupils’ project, titled “A Better World,” examined the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on how global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and access to clean water can be tackled locally and globally.

The class reflected on the impact of their school community on the world around them, taking stock of both the positive and negative causes of their actions, before setting personal and group goals to look after the planet.

Neale Richmond, the Minister of State for International Development, was full of praise for the pupils of Holy Trinity.

“I am really looking forward to meeting the pupils from Holy Trinity National School and their teacher at the national final on May 30,” Minister Rickmond stated. “I know that there is a great sense of excitement around the event in Dublin Castle.

“I am also looking forward to personally thanking our primary school teachers for their continued commitment, not just to participating in the Our World Awards, but also for nurturing an ethos of global citizenship amongst our young people.”

Holy Trinity National School, Westport, will be amongst the 15 schools in Dublin Castle for the ceremony, which is run by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
