Mayo boxers in contention for gold medals at youth world championships

THERE is great excitement in Mayo sporting circles as two local women are set to box for gold medals this weekend after winning their semi-final bouts at the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro.

Nell McLaughlin from Westport and Carlagh Peake from Ballyhaunis will come home with at least silver medals after claiming impressive wins in their semi-finals yesterday (Thursday).

Peake overcame a cagey start to defeat Romania’s Mihaela Ramona by unanimous decision in her flyweight semi-final.

McLaughlin, a middleweight from Eagle Boxing Club, had an impressive win over Dilara Sak from Turkey despite losing the first round.

Both McLaughlin and Peake will compete in their final bouts on Saturday.
