THE recent historic exploits of two Mayo GAA clubs will be acknowledged at The Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars awards next month.
Both Moy Davitts and The Neale will pick up ‘Special Achievement’ awards at the charity fund-raising event in Knockranny House Hotel, Westport.
All proceeds from this year’s event (which is being held on Saturday, December 15) will go to the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation.
Moy Davitts are being honoured for their recent victory in the Celebrity Bainisteoir TV series when Calum Best led them to a famous Final win over Longford’s Newtowncashel at Parnell Park, Dublin.
The East Mayo club represented the county with distinction through the TV series, promoting both Moy Davitts GAA and the Foxford area on and off the field.
The Neale, meanwhile, are still basking in the glow of their record-breaking Mayo Junior Championship Final victory over Ardnaree last month.
The South Mayo lads emerged with their first ever county title after almost three hours of football — a replay and extra-time being required before John Varley, their inspirational captain, eventually lifted the Pete McDonnell Cup.
Both clubs will be presented with awards to honour their efforts at the star-studded bash, which is organised in association with AIB.
The Club Stars Team of the Year — and five replacements — will be revealed on the night, as well as the Players of the Year in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Championships respectively.
Two new categories — a Rising Club Star ‘Young Player of the Year’ and a Club Star ‘Personality of the Year’ — are also being introduced by the event organisers this season.

Armagh legend is Special Guest

MEANWHILE, the most successful club footballer of all-time, Oisín McConville, will be the special guest at the eighth annual Club Stars Banquet.
The former Armagh forward — who won an All-Ireland senior medal in 2002 — also picked up two All Stars, seven Ulster championships and a National League title with the Orchard County during a glittering career.
However, it is his exploits with his club, Crossmaglen Rangers, that have really marked him out from every player in the country.
The 37 year-old has won 16 county championship medals, nine Ulster club championships, and six All-Ireland club titles with the famous South Armagh club.
McConville is also the all-time top Ulster scorer in championship football.
