In Westport

On a cool afternoon in Westport, the home-side produced a superb performance as they overcame the challenge of Galway outfit Colga.

Both sides had chances early on but the first goal of the afternoon arrived when Aoife Gannon hit a perfectly struck free kick. From 30 yards out, the Westport contingent were left celebrating when Gannon let fly.

Gannon doubled Westport’s lead just moments before half time when she produced a perfect effort from another free kick. When the hard working Saoirse Byrne was fouled just outside the box, Gannon had another go at goal and as her effort avoided the Colga wall and Meadabh Costello in goal, the ball crashed into the net as the hosts celebrated.

As the second half got underway, Larissa Kelly and Saoirse Byrne came close to adding a third while up the other end, Colga had chances but the defence of Orlaith McGeough, Anna Maloney, Aoife Gannon and Ashling Duffy denied them.

With 62 minutes on the clock, midfielder Sinead Hughes added a third for the hosts after she headed home from a well delivered corner. As time went on, Colga battled gamely but Westport United had too much for their opponents as they progress in the Connacht competition.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
