Castlebar Celtic came out on top of a tough, at times bad-tempered, encounter with Ballina Town to put one hand on the Super League trophy in Celtic Park.

Stevie Gavin’s side were below their usual high standards but still had enough about them to collect all three points thanks to goals from Jordan Loftus and Fionn Mahon.

It was the second time in a week that Celtic have gotten the better of their North Mayo rivals and leaves them eight points clear at the top of the Super League table with just three games left to play.

Mahon took his goal well in the first half after being set up by Mark Cunningham and Loftus secured the three points, getting onto the end of a Dylan Edwards corner in the 89th minute.

Ballina threw everything they had at the home side and could have had goals through Jamie Cawley, Ryan Moran and Jamie Moyles but the Celtic rearguard stood firm to keep the clean sheet, their tenth of an increasingly impressive season.

Castlebar Celtic now need just one point from their remaining three games against Crossmolina, Ballyheane and Kiltimagh/Knock United to retain the Super League title.
