A former Mayo GAA player is set to take to the golf courses of Scotland this week as part of the British Blind Open 2025.
Eddie Maguire, who hails from Blacksod, will be one of those teeing off at the Macdonald Cardrona Golf Resort for the event, which started today (Tuesday, July 8) and will run until Thursday, July 10.

Maguire has also had a distinguished inter-county Gaelic football career prior to losing his sight in 1979 due to an incident when a steel door struck him during a storm.
He had previously played for multiple counties, including Mayo, Meath, Carlow, and New York.
Success in this year’s Open would be far from his only success. In 2021, Galgorm Golf Club in Ballymena played host to his maiden British Open win, which he will be looking to build on across the Irish Sea.
Victories at the Scandinavian Open in Sollentuna and the Spanish Open in Costa Ballena followed. Now, he stands on the verge of adding to his impressive golf tally.

Maguire’s success is far from being confined to sporting spheres. He is known in education circles for his work on the ‘Less Stress, More Success’ study books for Leaving and Junior Certificate students, while he has also written songs for the likes of country music stars Mike Denver and Philomena Begley.
