The story of Canice Screene, the golfer who finished brilliantly at the Women’s Irish Open over the weekend, is one that has garnered plenty of interest in Mayo golfing circles.

Screene, who has plenty of family ties to this neck of the woods, put in a strong showing to finish second best of the Irish golfers on home turf, with a score of two under par at Carton House. Her final round of 66 was the joint best of the entire competition.

Canice's pedigree on the fairways is top class, having represented Ireland internationally, and her achievements over the weekend have seen her double her career earnings in just one tournament.

Canice may have grown up in London before attending university in America where she played on the college circuit, but the 23-year-old’s ties to the West of Ireland are strong.

Her mother, Caroline (née Gaughan), hails from Belmullet, while her father, Michael, was born and raised in Galway.

In an interview on RTÉ Radio One’s ‘Sunday Sport’ programme, she touched on just how important those roots were to her as she strutted her stuff on one of the biggest days in Ireland's sporting calendar, describing it as ‘the most special day ever’.

“This week is my favourite by far,” said Screene. “Being able to be out there with my family watching is so special, and to shoot seven under in the final round there is just everything.”
