Westport's Colm Moran hit 1-4 against Charlestown in the Mayo SFC.
Mayo Senior Club Championship
Westport 3-20
Charlestown 0-6
CHAMPIONS Westport laid down a marker of their intent to defend their title with a powerful display at home to Charlestown on Saturday evening, running out 23 point winners.
The holders strengthened their starting 15 from the team on the programme with Mayo defenders Eoghan McLaughlin and Rory Brickenden, along with star forward Colm Moran all getting the nod to start the game.
Fionn McDonagh also returned to the first XV after returning from a short break.
Moran, in particular, put in an impressive performance bagging 1-4 before being called ashore early in the second half.
His goal came 22 minutes in after Charlestown goalkeeper Kenneth Brennan and defender Jack Corley got their wires crossed as they tried to clear a ball.
That green flag put Westport into a 1-6 to 0-3 lead and they never looked back.
Up to that point Charlestown had stuck to their game plan and were well in the game with Patrick Lenehan, Jack Mahon and Jack Corley doing well.
Leading by 1-7 to 0-3 at the break, Westport turned on the afterburners early in the second half and had added another 1-9 to their tally before Charlestown managed to get their first score of the second period.
Westport’s second goal came from Eoghan McLaughlin with a typically powerful finish after a strong run into space.
The winners kept tapping over scores to see out the contest with their third goal of the day coming from Finbar McLaughlin to wrap things up in injury-time.
