A novelty charity event took place on April 26 which saw a group climb to the summit of Croagh Patrick. Participants came from all around the country to raise money for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Blood Bikes West. Every corner of Ireland was represented, Mayo, Kerry, Clare, Waterford, Dublin, Wicklow and Antrim to name a few including Jack who came all the way from China.

This event was organised by the committee based in Kilmeena and supported by Saoirse Marie Foundation and Doolin Motorcycle Club. Marie’s Foundation is a registered Cancer Charity founded in 2015 with the sole purpose of funding cancer related causes. While the climb was essentially a fundraising one, it proved to be a fantastic day out with much fun and laughter and some great photographs and videos. It was a wonderful sight to see the ‘Monks and Nuns’ as they made their pilgrimage to the summit much to the amusement of the other climbers.

Everyone supported each other on this challenging climb and thankfully all the Monks and Nuns completed the climb safely. This was in no small way due to the diligence of the excellent mountain stewards, Kieran Hosking and Tony Walsh, who spent the entire day on the Reek ensuring everyone’s safety.

A special thanks goes to Campbells Pub, Murrisk, who provided the group with their beer garden as a camp for the day. A huge thanks also goes to John O’Malley, who rallied the weary troops with live entertainment. The fun continued that night in the Clock Tavern with music provided by the wonderful rock band, Bourbon Smoke.

Finally, the organisers extend their grateful appreciation to all who supported this very deserving cause. An incredible €6,000 was raised for Mayo Roscommon Hospice and the cheque was presented to CEO, Martina Jennings.
