Spring tide causes road flooding in West Mayo town on Saturday night

Vehicles moved as Newport Quay area and coastal roads were impacted by high tide during Storm Dave

Newport flooding

Flooding took place at the Quay in Newport on Saturday evening as high spring tide peaked around 8.15pm.

Parts of Newport, Co Mayo were hit by significant flooding on Saturday night as high spring tides during Storm Dave led to coastal overflow in several areas.

The worst of the flooding occurred around the Quay, where water encroached onto roads and parking areas as the tide peaked at approximately 8.15pm.

Spring tides occur when the gravitational pull of the moon and sun align, and can lead to higher-than-normal sea levels and increase the likelihood of coastal flooding.

An alert was issued by local community group Baile Uí Fhiacháin urging car owners to move their vehicles from vulnerable areas, particularly at the back of the Quay.

Images shared online showed the extent of the flooding, with parts of the Quay submerged as tidal waters surged inland.

Conditions were also reported to be particularly severe along the Derradda section of the road between Newport and Mulranny, where flooding was described as “very bad” at the height of the tide.

While no injuries or major damage were reported, the incident has raised concerns among residents about the vulnerability of coastal infrastructure during periods of high tide and storm conditions.

Local residents are being advised to remain cautious during future high tides and to remain vigilant when warnings are issued, particularly in low-lying coastal locations.
