It turned out to be a Super Sunday for all involved in Westport United as they defeated Castlebar Celtic in Celtic Park. The Hoops who went the entire Super League campaign unbeaten last season have suffered their first league defeat since August 2024 when Ballyheane toppled them.

The visitors were fully deservedly winners as the Hoops struggled in attack across the afternoon. It was Westport captain Jack Dawson who opened the scoring when his effort crashed in off the crossbar.

Referee Eric Eaton showed six yellows and a red card across the afternoon as tensions were high at times in Celtic Park. Celtic’s Luke Kelly was shown a straight red card late in the second half after he was deemed to have used inappropriate language towards the referee.

Westport’s defence of Mikey O’Brien, Cillian White, Noah Massey and Alex Halpin were excellent throughout and it was the impressive Massey who added Westport’s second after he headed home from close range.

The midfield battle was one area where the visitors enjoyed plenty of success as youngster Darragh Reynolds showed his promise while enjoying lots of possession.

The hosts without the services of attackers Eoghan Hughes and Jason Hunt failed to create many clear-cut scoring chances paid the price as Westport recorded their first league victory over their rivals since July 2022.
