An Garda Siochána Mayo and the Road Safety Authority give important advice ahead of storm

Storm Éowyn

Wintry Storm Éowyn named set to cause damage

Mayo braces itself for the arrival of storm Éowyn. Met Eireann have alerted the public to a 'danger for life'. A red wind warning is in place for Mayo from Friday 4am until 12pm. Gale to storm force southwest to west winds will bring severe, damaging and extremely destructive gusts in excess of 130km/h.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) says, 'historic storm poses severe threat' and is urging the public to take extreme caution as a Red Weather Warning has been issued for the unprecedented and life-threatening Storm Éowyn.
This is not a typical weather event—it has the potential to be a significant and historic storm that poses a serious risk to life.

People are being urged not to travel on Friday during the red weather warning and to avoid unnecessary travel when it passes due to the extremely strong winds which will result in fallen trees and power lines, destruction to property, flying debris, and road blockages. This could also lead to cancellation of events, wave overtopping, coastal flooding in low lying and exposed areas and unsafe working conditions as well as significant structural damage and disruption and cancellations to transport.

Public safety is paramount. Everyone must act responsibly to protect themselves and others while reducing pressure on emergency services and crews. If travel is not essential, stay indoors, secure property, and avoid unnecessary risks.

Coastal areas face dangerous storm surges and flooding, and under no circumstances should people put themselves at risk by engaging in storm voyeurism.

There is also an ORANGE Wind warning for Ireland as Storm Éowyn will bring gale force southerly winds becoming westerly will bring severe, damaging and destructive gusts of up to 130km/h widely, with even higher gusts for a time.

An Garda Siochána Mayo have shared advice on how to ensure to take care of your house, older neighbours and pets:
"You will have seen the warnings from Met Eireann describing the potential of this latest storm to cause widespread damage and destruction to property. Can we perhaps suggest that you secure anything around your property that might be affected by the powerful winds that are expected," An Garda Siochána Mayo wrote in a post on Facebook.
"Consider checking on elderly neighbours, or those living in isolated areas, and assure them of your support. Remember pets can also be frightened, so keep them indoors until the storm passes. Don't drive any vehicles unless it's absolutely necessary, and if at all possible stay safe indoors. Most importantly, please stay away from costal areas and higher ground."
An Garda Siochana and all the emergency services are on standby and here to help. If you them during this weather event, please call 999 and ask for the relevant service.
