The switch-on date for the Christmas lights in Westport has been revealed.
The town will be lit up for the festive season on Friday, December 6.
Now that Mayo County Council has withdrawn from installing the Christmas lighting display across the town of Westport, the local Chamber of Commerce has cautiously taken up the baton. The committee of the Westport Chamber feels that the festive lighting of the centre of Westport is hugely important to all the people - residents, retailers, shoppers, and visitors.
Tender documents are being furnished to electrical contractors for the erection of a lighting programme for the town during the festive season. Some changes will be made to the lighting of the trees along the Mall, as the method of lighting individual branches in previous years had caused severe damage to the trees, this will determine the style of lighting in the future.
The Chamber acknowledges the support of elected councilors, with GMA funding towards the Christmas lights over the years, and looks forward again to their support in 2025.
Santa Claus arrival
The Santa Claus event at Westport Town Hall will also form part of the Shop Local initiative by the local Chamber. The 'Shop Local' promotion returns early next month.
Westport Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce that the very successful 'Shop Local' promotion of last December will this year be launched in early November. Over €5,000 of shopping vouchers will be available to win - a first prize of €1,000 worth of vouchers with the remaining €4,000 given away as runner-up prizes. Over 100 retailers and hospitality businesses are expected to take part in the promotion again this year.
Last year's campaign created an enormous amount of goodwill amongst retailers and shoppers.
During the 'Shop Local' promotion, a shopper who purchases over €20, is asked to complete a free ticket and place it in the completion box at the participating businesses. All the tickets are then collected for the main draw which takes place at the Leeson Enterprise Centre on Friday, December 20.
