Ballina businessman Paul Ginty says 'the relationship with the US president has soured because of his stance on Palestine'

Petition to remove Biden mural in Mayo reaches 1,400

The mural of Joe Biden in Ballina has been much debated since the war in Gaza broke out.

An online petition created by Ballina business owner Paul Ginty has gained steam. 1,500 people have signed the petition to remove the mural of Joe Biden in Ballina town centre. 

Ginty writes on the website of the petition: "Having a large mural of US president Joe Biden in Ballina reflects very badly on the people of Ballina, Mayo and Ireland who hold very different views to Joe regarding the ongoing genocide in Gaza."

And speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Ginty said he would prefer to see a blank wall rather that the mural.

The Biden mural was unveiled in September 2020 when Biden was running for the office of US president. He visited Mayo before in 2016 in his capacity as vice-president and then in 2017 to turn the sod for a new hospice in Castlebar. 

Biden has always been vocal about his family's Mayo heritage which came to a climax when he visited the county last year. Afterwards there were even calls for a permanent installation in Ballina to honour president Biden.

But recent developments with the war in Gaza and Ireland's recognition of a Palestinian state in opposition to official White House policy has strained the bilateral relationship. As a result already a Biden mural in Dundalk was vandalised last November
