BALLINA Municipal District Council have passed a motion to erect a permanent installation in honour of President Joe Biden’s historic visit to Ballina.

Thousands of people thronged the streets of Ballina in April to hear a speech from President Biden, whose great-great-great grandfather Edward Blewitt hailed from the area.

Cllr Jarlath Munnelly proposed the idea of placing an installation on the Cathedral Road in front of St Muredachs’s Cathedral, the location where the US President delivered his remarks.

A large mural of President Biden was painted on Ballina’s Market Square in 2020 in the months prior to his election as US President.

Speaking at today’s (Wednesday) meeting of Ballina Municipal District, Cllr Munnelly said a similar memorial had been erected across Ireland in places where other American Presidents had visited.

He cited New Ross in Wexford, where a lectern was built in honour of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in the years following his visit to his ancestral home.

“People have been coming to Ballina because of the [presidential] visit,” said Cllr Munnelly.

The motion received unanimous support from the other elected members of Ballina Municipal District Council.
