St Patrick's Day is shaping up to be a very special day in Westport with the Community Parade taking pride of place on the day. The parade is organised by a small voluntary group of Westport people who are extremely grateful for the support received from various people in the area, including funding provided from the four Westport-based councillors Brendan Mulroy, John O'Malley, Christy Hyland and Peter Flynn, who have allocated monies from their GMA funding. The committee are also grateful for funding received from the Westport Chamber of Commerce, Westport Credit Union and other local businesses to help defray the cost involved in the organisation of this public event.
The parade departs from the Scared Heart School car park at 12 noon tomorrow and travels through the town, with the reviewing stand located at Westport Town Hall. Well-known community hero Lennie Grimes will lead the parade, accompanied by the Defence Forces Colour Party and local dignitaries including guests from Westport twin town of Limavady, Mayor Councillor Steven Callaghan and Cllr Brenda Chives. Please be aware that there will be traffic restrictions in the town centre between 11.15am and 1.30pm and car owners are advised to use the public car parks, as no payment is required on the day.
A wide range of free street entertainment is arranged to complement the parade, before, during and immediately afterwards at various locations throughout the town.
The organising committee wish to acknowledge the guidance and support of Westport Gardai, Order of Malta Corps, Westport Men's Shed and the members of the Westport Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann who will provide live music at the Octagon before the start of the parade.
