Twisting and rotating the spinal column and trunk laterally helps to tone, massage and totally rejuvenate the abdominal organs. The following yoga pose is a spinal twist that works on the dorsal and lumbar regions of the spine, helping to remove any stiffness and mild pain in both areas.

  • Sitting on a yoga mat, bend both legs and take the shins backwards to the right so that the feet are next to the right hip
  • Sit the buttocks on the floor and lift the trunk so that the spine is fully extended
  • Take a couple of breaths here
  • Exhale and turn the trunk to the left so that the left shoulder moves to the left and the right shoulder comes forward
  • Turn the chest area and the abdominal area to the left
  • Place the right palm under the left thigh, with the palm
  • Place the left hand behind the left buttock and turn the spine more
  • Tuck the right shoulder blade in
  • Exhale again, move the left arm backwards, extending from the shoulder, bend the elbow and clasp the right upper arm with the left hand
  • Turn the head and neck to the left
  • Try staying here for up to one minute, breathing normally
  • Release the hands, bring the trunk back to face forward and straighten the hands
  • Now, bend the legs and take the shins backwards to the left, next to the left hip, and following the instructions just reversing the instructions from right to left, staying for the same amount of time on both sides
