‘A Wake in The West’ heads east


St Patrick’s Drama Group, Westport, is taking its production of the three-act comedy ‘A Wake in the West’ to the capital. The Mayo Association Dublin has invited the players to perform in Liberty Hall on Saturday, March 13.
After more than 20 sell-out performances in Westport, The Royal Theatre Castlebar, London and Chicago, the popularity of this play just seems to grow and grow. Despite the ever-widening circle of stages, St Patrick’s Drama Group remains mindful of the play’s local roots, and have decided to stage two more performances in Westport before they head to Dublin. It will be shown in Scoil Phadraig, Altamont Street, on Wednesday, March 10, and Thursday, March 11,  
‘A Wake in the West’ is set in a small fishing community on Clew Bay. It tells the story of the life – and passing – of Joe Healy, a man who drank himself to death. Carrying out his last request causes problems for his family, problems that are compounded by the arrival of his son from America after an absence of five years. Themes touched upon include poverty, economic instability, alcohol abuse, unrequited love and fear of the Church.
The hilarious string of events is brought to life by an excellent cast, which includes Pat Gibbons, Martin Vahey, Regina Mc Cormack, Rosaleen Heraty, Nuala Currid, Mairead Ryan, Tony Varley, Patsy Staunton and Lennie Grimes. The play is cleverly produced by Michael Hughes and directed by Martin Curry.
