Ballina hosts Ger Sweeney exhibition
Ballina Arts Centre’s eclectic visual art programme continues this month with ‘Syntheses’, an exhibition of new work by Westport-based artist Ger Sweeney.
Sweeney has exhibited widely at home and abroad, and has received numerous awards and nominations, including the UNESCO Award for Visual Art and Theatre.
In the 1990s, after a period as director and artist with Artspace Studios in Galway, he took some time away from painting to travel, working partly in interior design in Boston, and also theatre, and travelling to India, Brazil and South America.
In 1999, he took up painting again in Boston, before returning to Ireland. He has exhibited in Brussels, Norway, Finland, Argentina, Brazil and the US, as well as in several galleries around Ireland. He is currently represented by Hillsboro Fine Art, Dublin.
This exhibition presents new and recent works which continue to explore and develop his ongoing engagement with contemporary painting practices, including abstract and colour field painting, kinesthetics and sound, and aspects of landscape and light.
‘Syntheses’, an exhibition of new work by Ger Sweeney, runs at Ballina Arts Centre, Barrett Street, Ballina, until May 31.
