Belmullet to host ‘Tom Crean’

The award-winning play ‘Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer’, written and performed by Aidan Dooley, will be staged in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, on Monday, March 5, at 8.30pm.
Tom Crean (1877–1938) also known as the ‘Irish Giant’, was an Irish seaman and Antarctic explorer from Co Kerry. He was the only man to serve with Scott and Shackleton on three famous expeditions: Discovery (1901–04), Terra Nova (1910–13), and Endurance (1914–16).
In this play, Dooley breathes new, vibrant life into the explorer’s 36-mile solitary trek across the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly. The journey has been described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration.”
