WATCH: Work begins on Western Rail Corridor into Mayo

Another significant step to link Mayo to the rest of the Atlantic coast as part of the Western Rail Corridor has taken another significant step, as clearance work has already begun at Tuam Station.

A video, posted by Galway East TD Seán Canney,  shows diggers clearing the railway line which will soon connect Claremorris to Athenry via Tuam.

The preparation of the rail bed, as well as the clearing of vegetation from the tracks, is the latest step on a project which could potentially link with Ireland West Airport and Sligo in the future.

@seancanneytd I was at Tuam Station this week as on-the-ground works began - with clearing and preparation of the rail bed now underway. This is the first visible step towards restoring rail services from Athenry - Tuam - Claremorris, reconnecting Galway and Mayo and strengthening transport for the entire West. Seeing activity on the line is a significant and symbolic moment for our region. The Western Rail Corridor is now a targeted priority in the new Transport Sectoral Plan and this work shows that commitment being put into action. I'll keep driving this forward to ensure trains return to Tuam and that we rebuild this vital rail link for communities across the West. #WesternRailCorridor #Tuam #Galway #RegionalDevelopment ♬ original sound - Sean Canney TD
